Up till today, there is no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. Therefore, the best way to protect against the disease is to keep away from the virus. Viruses are known to spread mainly among people who are in contact with one another. Therefore, it’s essential to know the mechanism of virus transmission.
Transmission
To protect against COVID-19, we have to know how the virus is transmitted. Infected people usually have viruses in their mouths, noses or throats. Droplets come out of our mouths and noses when talking, coughing, sneezing, etc. If someone is infected with the virus, then the droplets coming out of their mouths and noses will carry the virus in them. To make matters worse, if those droplets fall on someone else’s mouths, noses, or eyes, they can infect other people. Based on current statistics on COVID-19 cases, it is shown that each infected person will infect two other people on average. This number is enormous because if we do not take proper measures to prevent infection, the number of people affected will grow exponentially. However, we can reduce this number if we can prevent transmission.
Contact Tracing to Prevent COVID-19
Given what we’ve known of virus transmission, the best way to prevent COVID-19 is to limit the contact between infected people with others. The purpose of contact tracing is to ask those who get infected for isolation. Meanwhile, those who have been exposed to the virus should be put in quarantine and thus reduce virus transmission. If a person becomes ill, their infectious period could last from a couple of days before the illness and weeks after the onset.
What else should you do?
Wash Your Hands
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Washing hands can help you stay healthy and prevent the spread of respiratory and diarrheal diseases.
Cover Mouth and Nose
Cover your mouth and nose when around others and avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes. Masks that cover both your nose and mouth provide an extra layer of protection from the spread of COVID-19.
Clean and Disinfect
Clean and disinfect surfaces regularly. The surfaces include keys, counters, doorknobs, light switches, phones, keyboards and mouses, toilets, faucets, and sinks. Use detergent on dirty surfaces before performing the disinfection.
Boost Your Immune System
Have good nights of sleep help you build up your immune systems. A healthy immune system can prevent you from infections more than a sleep-deprived immune system. You should have six to eight hours a sleep a night. If you’re having trouble sleeping then melatonin supplements may be a good option.
Balanced Diet
Nutritional deficiency is bad for your health and makes it easy for you to catch viruses and bacteria. It is essential to eat nutritional foods and keep a healthy and strong immune system.
